SOL Practice Items

View the VMAST Practice Items for the Virginia Modified Achievement Standards Test.

These practice items provide examples of the new content and increased rigor represented by the revised Standards of Learning (SOL) and illustrate the new Technology-Enhanced Item types for the mathematics, reading, science, and writing SOL tests. Technology-Enhanced Items (TEI) require students to indicate their responses in ways other than a multiple-choice format.

Please note that the practice items are not intended to be a complete test and are not intended to cover all content for the grade level or course. Furthermore, while the practice items provide examples of some TEI, they are not intended to represent all types of functionality associated with these item types.

Audio versions of the practice items are available for those students whose Individualized Education Plan (IEP), 504 Plan or Limited English Proficient Student Assessment Participation Plan includes an audio accommodation on a Standards of Learning test.

Mathematics Tools Practice: The online Mathematics Tools Practice allows students to practice using the online tools (such as the ruler, protractor or compass) available within TestNav, the online testing software used in Virginia. All tools that are available for any grades 3-8 test are provided within the Grades 3-8 Tools Practice. Likewise, all tools that are available for any EOC test are provided within the End-of-Course Tools Practice. This means that the tools included within each application do not necessarily indicate the tools that will be available for a particular test. Tabbed Reading Passages Demonstration: Demonstrates how tabs can be used to display paired reading selections in an online test. When paired reading selections are used on the reading tests, students are presented with two passages and a set of test items that are based on either one or both passages. Students may use the tabs to move between the two reading selections. Tabbed reading selections can be used for end-of-course (EOC) Reading during the fall 2012 test administration, and for grade 8 Reading and end-of-course (EOC) Reading during the spring 2013 test administration. Reading Passage Scrolling Demonstration: Demonstrates how a scroll bar can be used to display a reading passage in an online reading test. No practice items will appear in this scrolling demonstration.
