Governor McDonnell Announces Governor’s Challenge in Economics and Personal Finance – One of several programs to ensure successful implementation of Virginia’s new high school graduation requirement
The dates for the 2012 National Financial Capability Challenge have just been announced. The next opportunity to take the Challenge will be March 12 - April 13, 2012. You may want to look at your school calendar to schedule a computer lab and make plans to deliver the Challenge during its first week or two if possible - the website will get much busier closer to the end date.
Please check the Treasury's Challenge website (challenge.treas.gov) for the latest information and to review the instructions for delivery. There is also a wealth of financial education resources available on the site for you to use in planning for the Challenge.
Opportunities in economics and personal finance subject area are now available to begin to help prepare teachers for the new course requirements. See Professional Development and Resources.
Instruction in economics and personal finance prepares students to function effectively as consumers, savers, investors, entrepreneurs, and active citizens. Students learn how economies and markets operate and how the United States’ economy is interconnected with the global economy. On a personal level, students learn that their own human capital (knowledge and skills) is their most valuable resource.
Beginning with students entering ninth grade in fall 2011, one standard unit of credit in Economics and Personal Finance is required for graduation with a Standard, Standard Technical, Advanced Studies or Advanced Technical Diploma. Students may earn this credit by successfully completing the course at any time during their high school career. Students with disabilities seeking a Modified Standard Diploma may use the course to satisfy one of the three required mathematics credits.
Videos for Teachers
In order to ensure that teachers of history/social science, career and technical education and mathematics have access to instruction in the Economics Education & Financial Literacy content areas, VDOE has produced a series of videos for Teachers.
